Participation Report of the Munich repository workshop

INFRAFRONTIER IMPC Workshop: Promoting the international exchange of mouse mutant resources, Munich, Germany

The INFRAFRONTIER IMPC workshop entitled “Promoting the international exchange of mouse mutant resources,” was held in Munich, Germany on May 8-9, 2014. Regarding the discussions we had at this workshop, an editorial has been published in NATURE as follows: This workshop was held for the directors of major mouse repositories, IP and technology transfer experts, representatives of scientific journals and funding agencies. Seventy participants gathered at the workshop for two-day heated discussion. From Japan, Dr. Yuichi Obata, Director of RIKEN BRC and Dr. Atsushi Yoshiki, Head of Experimental Animal Division, RIKEN BRC, Professor Naomi Nakagata and Dr. Toru Takeo of CARD, Kumamoto University attended to the meeting. The scope of the meeting was to improve procedures such as MTA, microbiological monitoring, transportation methods, licenses and intellectual property issues to simplify international exchanges of mouse mutant resources. We further discussed on the best practices in sharing research tools, the role of mouse repositories and the impact of rapidly spreading use of the genome editing technology such as CRISPR/Cas9.

In the panel discussion by repository representatives, Dr. Obata emphasized that the most important role of the resource center was to ensure the reproducibility of experimental results and a strict quality control is essential for this purpose (photos).
