Revision of Cost Sharing for Deposits (Important Notice)

The RIKEN BioResource Research Center (BRC) has, until now, covered the costs associated with the transportation of mouse strains for deposit, including the provision of shipping containers and logistical arrangements, provided that depositors prepared the animals.

However, due to the recent increase in transportation and related operational costs, it has become difficult to maintain this level of financial support. Accordingly, from April 1, 2026, depositors will be responsible for all costs associated with the transportation of live mice, including shipping fees and transport materials. We appreciate your kind understanding.

At the same time, in line with the principles of animal welfare (3Rs), biosafety, and efficient and sustainable resource management, BRC encourages deposits of mouse strains in the form of frozen sperm or embryos. For deposits using frozen sperm or embryos, BRC will continue to provide dry shippers and cover all transportation costs, as before.

Depositing frozen strains offers advantages over live animal transport, including reduced transportation costs, minimized animal burden, avoidance of infection risks, and stable preservation during transport.

This revision is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure the sustainable maintenance and high-quality operation of bioresource repositories under limited resources.
We sincerely appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
