Irradiation with 405 nm violet light to the lower body of Kaede mouse changed fluorescence from green to red.

Kaede is a photoconvertible fluorescent protein which was cloned from a stony coral Trachyphyllia geoffroyi. Kaede changes its color from green to red within a few minutes after exposure to violet light [1]. In transgenic mice carrying Kaede cDNA under the CAG promoter, all the cell types constitutively exhibit green fluorescence signal [2]. Immune cells in lymphoid organs and peripheral tissues in Kaede mice can be labeled in red by brief exposure to violet light [3]. Kaede mice are a useful tool to monitor cell replacement at the photoconverted site and/or cell migration to other regions in the body.
