Crohn’s disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) thought to be caused by genetic and environmental factors that affect host-microbe interactions and production of inflammatory mediators. The Card15/Nod2 gene has been identified as the first susceptible gene for CD. The Card15 deficient mice show hyper activation in immune system caracterized by increased cytokine production and bigger Peyer’s patches. This strain is useful as an animal model for Crohn’s disease.
