Dates: August 26-28, 2019

RIKEN BioResource Research Center (BRC), Japan (Director: Toshihiko Shiroishi, Ph.D.), Model Animal Research Center (MARC), Nanjing University, China (Director: Dr. Shuai Chen, Ph.D.), and Korea Mouse Phenotyping Center (KMPC), Korea (Director: Je Kyung Seong, DVM, Ph.D.) have co-organized annually educational programs to promote use of mouse resources in young scientists. This year, the 8th Japan-Sino-Korea Mouse Resource Workshop 2019 entitled “Precision Modelling of Human Diseases in Mice and Cell Resources” was held from August 26 to 28 at RIKEN BRC in Tsukuba. The workshop was quite successful with fruitful interactions and exchanges among over 80 participants from around 11 countries and regions. We appreciate all the participants and supporters of the workshop.

Dr. Yuichi Obata, Senior Advisor (Former Director of BRC) and Professor Xiang Gao, Founding Director of MARC, have jointly started the international mouse educational programs since 2012. A series of educational courses have been co-organized focusing on mouse genetics and relevant technical trainings for young scientists. The first course was held on August 27-29, 2012 at RIKEN BRC in Tsukuba. After that MARC and RIKEN BRC hosted alternately every year until KMPC directed by Professor Je Kyung Seong, Seoul National University, Korea joined and hosted the 6th workshop in 2017. The 2018 workshop was held at MARC, Nanjing University.

In the workshop 2019, we had 43 graduate students and young scientists (from China, Egypt, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Taiwan, UK and Viet Nam) of universities and institutions mainly from around Tsukuba area. Following the opening remarks by Dr. Obata, we had four keynote lectures, 19 expert lectures in 9 sessions and three talks in two Luncheon seminars on days 1 and 2.

For keynote lectures, we invited distinguished scientists: Dr. Masami Kanai (Tokyo Medical and Dental University), Dr. Toshikuni Sasaoka (Brain Research Institute, Niigata University), Dr. Yoshihiro Miwa (University of Tsukuba) and Dr. Ruth Arkell (The Australian National University). Each expert lecture was provided by the following 12 scientists from China and Korea in addition to 8 BRC scientists: Drs. Yun Stone Shi (Associate Director), Minsheng Zhu, Chaojun Li, Jianghuai Liu, Guoqiang Wan from MARC, Dr. Xiao Han from Nanjing Medical University; Dr. Je Kyung Seong from Seoul National University, Drs. Ki Taek Nam and Sungsoon Fang from Yonsei University College of Medicine, Dr. Kyoungmi Kim from Korea University College of Medicine, Dr. Young Jae Lee from Gachon University, Dr. Ho Lee from National Cancer Center, Korea; Drs. Toshihiko Shiroishi, Hiroshi Masuya, Masaru Tamura, Yohei Hayashi, Mika Suga, Kimiko Inoue, Toshiaki Nakashiba and Shinya Ayabe from BRC. Dr. Takashi Sugiyama and Mr. Mitsuru Araki, Olympus Corporation and Dr. Makoto Matsuyama, Shigei Medical Institute provided lunch seminar talks.

In the evening of day 1, posters were presented by the participants. In the end of each talk and coffee breaks, all participants interacted and exchanged actively. In the evening of day 2, each participant was given a Certificate of Completion by Drs. Yun Stone Shi, Ki Taek Nam and Toshikiho Shiroishi.

On day 3 AM, the below four optional practical courses were provided for the participants to choose according to their preferences.

  1. Mouse Clinic Behavioral Test (by Dr. Masaru Tamura)
  2. Embryo Manipulation (by Dr. Atsuo Ogura)*
  3. Cell Bank Tour (by Drs. Yukio Nakamura and Yohei Hayashi)
  4. Web Tool Overview (by Drs. Hiroshi Masuya and Shinya Ayabe)

* An extended expert training was conducted from August 29 to September 2 for three participants from China.
